When you ask Vince Staples why it is he favors basic wardrobe staples like graphic tees, Chuck Taylors and Levi’s over flashier designer wares from Balmain or Yeezy, he’ll earnestly tell you, “I don’t want to feel unreachable or unattainable to kids. I just want them to look up to me as someone who has a good life and see that my appearance and demeanor isn’t that far from theirs. I think it will help them value their opinion of themselves more.” It’s a response you might not expect from one of the most promising rappers on the rise today, especially in a music industry where flaunting one’s wealth and creating drama with other artists is as much a way to get press as actually putting out a new song.
But the more you get to know Staples, the more you start to see his true character as a levelheaded, whip smart, and—as even our own videos will show you—unquestionably funny 23-year-old. Yet when a controversial video related to his song “Norf Norf” recently went viral—in which an outraged mother complained about the song’s lyrics for what seemed to be all the wrong reasons—Vince’s levelheadedness won out over his humor. Rather than add fuel to the fire, he instead called on his followers to turn the situation into a “progressive dialogue.” He takes a similarly clear-minded, if sometimes irreverent, approach to the stuff in his life he uses most as well.
