Warner Bros. and DC have started development on a Supergirl movie. Deadline reports Oren Uziel, the writer behind the upcoming Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog films as well as one of the co-writers of the hilarious 22 Jump Street, will pen the script. It’s unclear whether the flick will tie into the larger DC extended universe mythology or not, or if it will overlap with the show of the same name on the CW, starring Melissa Benoist and going into its fourth season. The Wrap‘s report says a new actress will be cast.
The DC Extended Universe has quite a few films on the immediate horizon, with Aquaman arriving Dec. 21, 2018 and Shazam! hitting cinemas April 5, 2019. DC continues to bank on women-led superhero movies, with the sequel to the incredibly successful Wonder Woman arriving Nov. 1, 2019, while a film based on the Harley Quinn/Batgirl–centric Birds of Prey has entered the development stage. There’s also a whole Batgirl movie, abandoned by Joss Whedon and handed to Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson. The CW’s Arrowverse will also welcome Batwoman this year, and the boundary-breaking lesbian hero will get a standalone pilot at the very least.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe, meanwhile, waited till its 21st film to give the lead to a woman, the Brie Larson–starring Captain Marvel, hitting theaters March 8, 2019.
